Raising A Glass

2nd May 2015 marked a momentous day for United Wine Merchants as they celebrated 30 years in business.  Having started life in 1985 with just five members of staff and a handful of brands the company has grown beyond all recognition to today being part of the Heineken group, comprising over 50 members of staff and boasting an extensive portfolio of premium wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks.

At the helm of UWM is Managing Director Martin McAuley. 38 years in the drinks industry, 30 of those with UWM.

Like any good manager, he attributes United Wines’ success to the quality of the people working there. On the management team Martin says he relies heavily on Gail Service Commercial Director, John Davis Distribution Manager, Head of Finance Siobhan McSorley and Sales Manager Ross Blackburn.

“It’s a team effort,” he said. “We’ve a small management team but we all have our key strengths and manage to bring that together to great effect.”
In addition are United Wines’ operations personnel, all of which are essential in keeping the supply chain in motion and the level of customer service – a factor the company places heavy importance on – to a high standard.

The twelve sales people, seven in Northern Ireland and five in the South, are obviously operating at the coal face of what is most definitely a competitive business but combined with their considerable experience, the ever-evolving stock of brands in the company’s cellar makes sure there is a fresh offering to answer customers’ needs.  In addition to this our marketing team create an extra dimension providing vital support, tailoring activity, brand building, increasing sales and driving footfall in conjunction with customers.

Martin continues “Having been at United Wines from the start, I’m very proud of the company and what we’ve achieved here. It’s a product of the strong team I have behind me who help make my job a lot easier. This, along with a weather eye on the customer, looks set to pave the way for a prosperous future for the company. In today’s world you can’t get complacent and providing we continue to innovate and keep ahead of customers’ needs, we’ll continue to have success.”

While 30 years in business is a considerable milestone UWM are always looking towards the future. With their extensive portfolio of premium brands, dedicated staff and excellent customer base glasses are charged towards the next 30 years.
